The Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University(PKU), Beijing, China invites applications for faculty at all levels and for post-doctoral fellows, starting on October 1, 2007. We seek qualified applicants in all branches of astronomy and astrophysics, with a particular emphasis on expertise in theoretical astrophysics during this first round of recruitment.
The newly established KIAA is intended to be an international center of excellence in astrophysics which promotes basic research in China with the highest international standards. The program of KIAA will focus on studies in three major areas of astrophysics: a) particle cosmology, first light and galaxy assemblage; b) star and planet formation; and c) gravitational physics and high-energy phenomena. It is designed to be a forum for global scientific exchange, an incubator for innovative projects, and a training center for international postdocs and students. Borrowing from the successful experiences of other institutions, a variety of academic activities and programs shall be organized to stimulate the research. International participation in those programs are essential and English will be the working language of the KIAA. Being a first-rate multidisciplinary university of high international standing, PKU provides a fertile environment to promote interdisciplinary interactions and a rich pool of top students in China and elsewhere. Together with colleagues in PKU's Department of Astronomy, successful candidates are expected to develop a forefront research program and to supervise promising students.
The Institute will appoint a small number of chaired professors on the basis of major scientific accomplishment or exceptional potential. We strive to attract scientists of high caliber who will provide the intellectual backbone of KIAA. Several tenure appointments will be designated for the KIAA professors. They are selected based on their scientific leadership and original contribution to their respective fields. Several additional appointments will be reserved for KIAA members with an initial term appointment of three years and renewable for an additional three-year term. The positions will be earmarked for promising young talents in emerging fields. All positions will be open to the most qualified candidates of all nationalities.
The Institute is under the leadership of its founding director, D.N.C. Lin, associate director, X.W. Liu, and coordinator J.S. Chen. An international advisory committee chaired by F.H. Shu will help the KIAA to identify its faculty appointments, make recommendation of its research directions, and review its performance.
