In the 21st century, universities across the globe are all engaging in collaboration. Asia Pacific is not an exception.
Formed in 2002 as the brainchild of NCKU's then President, Professor Chiang Kao, SATU has gained strength and breath in academic flavor as a platform for the universities in Asia Pacific to grow collectively together. From November 19-21, 2007, SATU summit, this year with the theme "Industry=Academia Collaborations and Business Plan Competition was held in Mahido University in Bangkok, Thailand.
After two days of SATU Summit, Academician Michael Ming Chiao Lai, President of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and Chairman of SATU's Steering Committee, made the exciting announcement that five distinguished Indian research universities have joined SATU.
With additions of Indian's institutions, universities from Taiwan, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei and India are now part of SATU.

With these five outstanding institutions from India joining SATU, the Steering Committee made the decision to alter the name SATU from Southeast Asia and Taiwan Universities Presidents Forum to Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities Presidents Forum, while keeping the acronym SATU intact.
Also, Professor Surendra Prasad, Director of IIT Delhi was invited to be on SATU's Steering Committee.
It was also agreed at the Steering Committee meeting that SATU's 2008 meeting will take place in NCKU in Tainan.
